HACKENSACK, NJ (TIP): An Indian woman was charged with first-degree murder in the death of her infant daughter, acting Bergen County Prosecutor Dennis Calo announced May 3. The 5-day-old baby girl had knife wounds to her throat and arm, according to police. The mother, Hiralbahen Bhavsar, 29, of Little Ferry, was also charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, Calo said.
On May 2, 2019, at approximately 8:30 p.m., the Bergen County Public Safety Operations Center (PSOC) received a 9-1-1 call from a female, later identified as Hiralbahen Bhavsar, who initially reported she was having a medical emergency at her apartment on Liberty Street. Little Ferry Police Officers responded to the residence at 310 Liberty Street, Apartment # 35, and found multiple family members inside of the apartment. While at the scene, Hiralbahen Bhavsar emerged from a locked bedroom and confronted the officers. Upon entering the bedroom, the officers discovered the lifeless body of an infant child who suffered apparent sharp force injuries. Bhavsar was taken into custody at that time.
As a result of the investigation, Hiralbahen Bhavsar was arrested on May 2, 2019, in Little Ferry, N.J. and charged with one count of Murder, N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3A(1), a crime of the 1st degree; and one count of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4D, a crime of the 3rd degree. Hiral Bhavsar will have her first appearance on a date to be determined in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack, NJ.
